Christ Followers Love Their Enemies

In Matthew 5:43–48, Jesus gives His followers one of His most challenging commands: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. This kind of love doesn’t come naturally, but Jesus never intended for us to live the Christian life in our own strength. He has given us the Holy Spirit as our Helper, empowering us to live differently.

Before we knew Christ, sin separated us from God and made us His enemies—yet God loved us anyway. Jesus didn’t wait for us to deserve His love; He came to rescue us while we were still sinners. Now He calls us to extend that same grace to those who hurt, oppose, or mistreat us.

Instead of allowing bitterness, resentment, and revenge to control our response, Christ-followers are called to look beyond the offense and recognize the spiritual condition of the person. Our struggle is not against flesh and blood. We are called to bless instead of curse, pursue peace as far as it depends on us, refuse revenge, and overcome evil with good.

Christ-followers love their enemies because Christ first loved us when we were His enemies. With the Holy Spirit’s help, we can respond to hostility with sincere love and allow the life of Jesus to be seen through us.
